The origins of The Black Drums go back to the year 2008. Since then, a lot has changed and the band itself has advanced as a whole. After a few internal reorganizations, four young musicians from Graz with carinthian roots form the current line-up: Andy Knafl (Drums), Berend Lippitz (Bass), Alex Pipam (Lead-Guitar) and Michael Polzer (Vocals & Guitar). The old name was left behind and thus The Black Drums were born.
Their music is, at first sight clear and catchy, but only if you take a closer look/listen you will spot the variety of layers it contains, just like their name. The influences of the four members are as versatile as they are diverse, they spread from classic-rock, hardrock of the 70s to indie-rock, punk and even blues. With this variety, The Black Drums developed their very own signature to the rock-genre, which is clearly reflected in their own songs.
As different as their songs may sound, the powerful voice of Michael Polzer, which is deeply seated in the punk-genre, runs like a common thread through each and every single one of their songs. The same thing goes for the guitar play of Alex Pipam. Their goal is not to show off their virtuosity, but to create an emotional moment where rawness meets euphony and punk-attitude meets haunting melodies. This results in a completely different musical work that always stays authentic and that promises an exciting listening experience. In the July of 2015 the band released their first EP named “Walking with Ghosts”. In the meantime they are working constantly on new songs at a high pace, with which they want to conquer Austrians stages. And everyone who has seen them before knows how long their songs can stay in their heads.
